Kissimmee, FL - What started as a promising day turned into nothing but a nightmare for the Geneva College softball team. A rough start to the 2013 season continued on Wednesday as the Golden Tornadoes dropped games to Catholic University and Illinois College to fall to 1-5 in the early season. Geneva dropped a 7-6 decision to Catholic after holding a 6-0 lead through five innings. In the night cap, Geneva saw a 5-5 game in the sixth inning get broken wide open in a 12-5 loss.
Game one against Catholic began with Geneva scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Ashley Davis′ two-run single highlighted the four-run explosion. The Golden Tornadoes added two more runs in the second inning on a two-run triple from Christina Fuqua. Geneva banged out eight hits and it seemed like that would be more than enough with Andrea Hinds cruising through the first five innings. Hinds scattered four hits through five innings and struck out three before getting touched up in the sixth. Hinds allowed three runs before being lifted for Samantha Johnson. Johnson was the hard luck loser after a pair of Geneva miscues in the seventh inning opened the door for Catholic University′s three-run game winning rally.
Geneva′s offense posted three more runs in the bottom of the first inning against Illinois College. Trailing 2-0 going to the bottom of the first, Geneva got an RBI single from Davis, a sacrifice fly from Laura Beck and a go-ahead single from Lori Deem. Illinois responded with three more runs in before the Golden Tornadoes rallied to tie the game again in the fourth inning. Elyssa Simko picked up a two-run single in the fourth to tie the game again. Geneva loaded the bases in the fifth inning but was unable to grab the lead. Illinois posted four runs in the sixth and three more in the seventh to break the game open. Christina Fuqua picked up three hits in the night cap to lead Geneva′s 11-hit attack.
Following an off day on Thursday, Geneva will play Muskingum and Concordia at the Rebel Spring Games on Friday afternoon.
