Geneva College junior engineering major Alexander Dunaway is among a select group of 26 members of Alpha Chi across the nation to receive one of the organization′s national fellowships and scholarships for the 2013-14 academic year. He was awarded the Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship.
"It's exciting to have won an award on the national level," says Dunaway. "I think it's more the accomplishment than anything else. Kind of like when you get an A on a paper; it just feels good to know you did a good job on something you have spent a lot of time and effort on."
Only 10 Alfred H. Nolle Scholarships, worth $1,500 each, are awarded per year. Recipients of this award must be full-time undergraduate students who exemplify academic excellence. The Alfred H. Nolle Scholarship is named for one of Alpha Chi's pioneers, Dr. Alfred Nolle, who served as the organization′s secretary-treasurer for 41 years.
Alpha Chi is a national college honors society that admits students from all disciplines. There are now some 300 active chapters in almost every state. The local Lambda chapter inducts juniors and seniors with a GPA in the top 10% of their class. A student′s character, in addition to grades, is taken into consideration at the time of acceptance. Alpha Chi's name is formed from the initial letters of the Greek words ALETHEIA, meaning "truth," and XAPAKTHP, meaning "character." The organization′s motto is taken from John 8:32, "You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
