Crestview Hills, KY - Not too many teams travel to Kentucky to take on Thomas More College and come away with a pair of victories. On Thursday, the Geneva College softball team did exactly that with a 1-0 win and a 5-2 win to sweep the twin bill from the Saints. The Golden Tornadoes clinched a spot in next week′s PAC tournament where they will attempt to defend their 2012 conference title. Geneva improved to 18-14 overall and 12-4 in league play.

Geneva′s pitching duo of Samantha Johnson and Andrea Hinds kept Thomas More in check in earn two victories. Game one was a pitcher′s duel throughout with neither team able to dent the scoreboard through the first six innings. In fact, Geneva didn′t get its first hit until the seventh inning. Laura Beck opened the final frame of a scoreless tie with a base hit and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt. With two outs, Mackenzie Kemerer came through with the eventual game winning base hit. One run would be all Johnson needed as she tossed a three-hit shutout with five strikeouts. Johnson won for the 13th time in 2013.

Andrea Hinds continued the good work in the circle with a complete game win in game two. She allowed six hits and two earned runs. Following a pair of Thomas More runs in the second inning, Hinds allowed just two base runners in the final five innings of work. Geneva opened the scoring with two runs in the first on an RBI ground out from Ashley Davis and a sacrifice fly off of the bat of Laura Beck. After Thomas More tied the game in the second, the Golden Tornadoes posted three runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. A bases loaded walk to Christina Fuqua gave Geneva the lead before Ashley Davis launched a two-run double for two more tallies. Hinds settled in after the second and closed the door the rest of the way. Geneva finished game two with eight hits from seven different players.

Geneva closes out the conference schedule on Saturday with a doubleheader at Chatham University. The Golden Tornadoes will visit Case Western next Tuesday in anticipation of next weekend′s PAC tournament.
