Geneva College′s SAE Baja team placed 21st out of a total of 99 competitors in an April event at Cookeville, Tennessee. The program, run by the Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE), challenges college students to design, build and race rugged, single-seat off-road vehicles.
“Geneva performed at an all-time best,” the Baja team explained on its Facebook page. “The car sustained no damage all weekend, and passed technical inspection on the first day!”
Geneva′s team, jointly advised by The Race Place owner Bret Moyer, engineering staff member Dave Clark and engineering faculty member David Che, left on April 17 for the intercollegiate competition hosted by Tennessee Tech University. The team′s car placed third in the sled pull, winning an award; 47th for acceleration; 11th for suspension and traction, with zero penalties on both tries; 29th in maneuverability; and was 14th in the endurance race, clocking in only three laps behind the leading vehicle.
“The trip was very successful, and the team was pleased with the results,” stated Cameron Davies. He explained that the team′s score represents their best result ever, easily beating their 41st place performances in both 2012 and 2011.
“Not bad for a three-man team that showed up with their car in a U-Haul trailer,” he continued. “The driving was really good and we managed not to break any parts of the car. We're really excited to see where the team goes next year and how they are able to improve upon the current design.”
