kablooey_1.jpg As the spring semester ended, Geneva College′s Chemistry Club held its annual “Big Kablooey,” a free event featuring an hour-and-a-half demonstration of over 15 chemical reactions and explosions performed by the club members.

The Big Kablooey allows students to highlight their hard work throughout the semester while educating others about chemistry. Experiments such as exploding hydrogen balloons, fireworks created by gummy bears, purple smoke, and liquid nitrogen were performed among several other well-received reactions.

kablooey_2.jpg “I really liked the underwater fireworks,” exclaimed Cally Cooper, a former club vice president. “It was a new experiment that I never saw before and it was really awesome. Most people don't know that fire can actually exist underwater so on top of these experiments looking cool, it also taught a lot.”

She added, “There is nothing more exciting than seeing SE022 packed to the rim full of our friends and family eager to enjoy a liquid nitrogen s ‘more all while having their mind blown by science.”

Advised by Associate Professor of Chemistry Dr. Kerry McMahon, thekablooey_3.jpg Chemistry Club is led by President Ian MacKenzie, Vice President Sarah Abbot, Treasurer Peter Doyle and Secretary Nicole Jones. Several students of Geneva′s Chemistry Club are recognized members of the American Chemistry Society.

Dr. McMahon said, "The students in the Chem Club did almost all of the demonstrations from fun with liquid nitrogen, flaming powder samples and underwater fireworks. There was lots of fire, smoke and loud noises. The event is always a highlight of the semester for both science and nonscience students."

For the 2013-2014 school year, the club was recognized as the top club on campus and received the Student Development Office “Perfection Award.”
