New Wilmington, PA - The defending conference champion Geneva College softball team got off to a good start at the 2013 PAC tournament. The Golden Tornadoes defeated Washington & Jefferson 6-3 in the opening round before dropping an 8-0 decision to Thomas More in the winner′s bracket. The two-game split pushed Geneva′s overall record to 21-17 and has forced the Golden Tornadoes into having to win three games on Friday to defend their title. Geneva will get a rematch with Washington & Jefferson in the first game on Friday with the winner having to beat Thomas More twice to grab the title.

Geneva got off and running early with four runs in the bottom of the first against Washington & Jefferson. Ashley Davis knocked in the first run with an RBI single which was followed by a two-run double from Laura Beck. Samantha Johnson plated Beck two batters later with a sacrifice fly. After the President′s cut the lead in half, Beck struck again in the third inning with a two-run homer to reestablish Geneva′s four-run lead.

Samantha Johnson went the distance for her 15th victory of the season. She allowed two earned runs on seven hits while striking out four in the game. Geneva managed just two hits in game one with two coming from Laura Beck to go along with her four RBI′s.

Game two was all Thomas More from the start. The Saints plated three runs in the first and three more in the fourth. Meanwhile, the Golden Tornadoes could muster very little offense with just two hits in the game. Johnson took the loss after four innings of work and three earned runs allowed. Andrea Hinds closed out the final two inning allowing one earned run on two hits.
