New Wilmington, PA - It certainly wasn′t without a fight, but the Geneva College softball team got dethroned on Friday as the Presidents′ Athletic Conference champions. The Golden Tornadoes dropped a 3-1 decision to Thomas More in the conference finals to finish the tournament with an overall record of 22-18. Earlier in the day, Geneva defeated Washington & Jefferson 3-0 to reach the finals but came up on the short end of the decision in the finals.

The final day of the PAC tournament opened with a 3-0 Geneva victory over Washington & Jefferson. Freshman pitcher Samantha Johnson hurled her fourth shut-out of the season and picked up her 16th win of the year to set a new school record for pitching victories by a freshman. She went seven innings and allowed just four hits while striking out four in the win. She also got it done at the plate scoring two of Geneva′s three runs. The first run of the game came on an Ashley Davis RBI single in the first inning. Johnson scored in the second on a wild pitch and scored again in the fourth on an RBI single from Andrea Hinds.

Thomas More jumped out in front on Geneva in the championship with an unearned run in the top of the first. The Saints plated single runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Elyssa Simko doubled home Hinds and Geneva loaded the bases in the final frame before coming up short. Johnson picked up two of Geneva′s five hits in the final. She picked up the loss after going six innings and allowing three runs, none of which were earned.

The Golden Tornadoes have qualified for the NCCAA national softball tournament next week which will begin next Thursday in Troutville, VA. It will be the second trip in three years for Geneva to the NCCAA nationals.
