Geneva Football continued tradition facing Frostburg State for the season home opener. The Golden Tornadoes defense shut down all touchdown opportunities for the Bobcats allowing the offensive to dominate the field for a 47-3 victory. The Golden Tornadoes will play under Reeves Field lights again this weekend against the Bethany Bison at 8 p.m.

Beaver Falls, PA - Geneva Football left the past behind and opened up 2013 under Reeves Field lights with the strong start they have been anxiously waiting. Geneva finished off Frostburg State with a capital ‘W′ for a final score of 47-3 starting their season with a 1-0 overall record.

"This season our theme verse is Philippians 3:12 because it talks about pressing on. Tonight we saw what a group of young men can do on the football field who believe in pressing on both in their head and in their heart - and this group has a lot of heart" said Head Coach Geno DeMarco. As tonights game kicked off, DeMarco entered his 21st season as Head Coach on Geneva′s football sidelines. The past two years DeMarco and the Golden Tornadoes dropped season openers to the Frostburg State Bobcats making tonight all the more exciting.

Geneva was the first to make a mark on the scoreboard with a two yard run by Rocco Colavecchia, the result of an 80 yard drive in a series of 12 plays. Frostburg′s Jake Armstrong made a 26 yard field goal in the last minute of the first quarter for a 7-3 game.

Geneva's defense then shut all doors for Frostburg as they kept the Bobcats off the scoreboard. Geneva took control of the game in the second quarter with 27 unanswered points. Zack Hayward connected with Dylan Jones two minutes into the quarter for a 15 yard touchdown pass. Mike Gardner′s extra point kick was good to top off the seven play 51 yard drive. Jones continued momentum four minutes later with a four yard run combined with a Gardner extra point kick, closing one door at a time for Frostburg. Josh Guiser received Hayward′s 58 yard pass for a four play drive moving up the field 72 yards and resulting in Geneva′s fourth touchdown of the night. Geneva′s defense continued to stop the ball consistently allowing the offense to return to the field with yet another touchdown in the second quarter. Colavecchia would get his second touchdown of the night with a one yard run for six more points for a 34-3 lead at halftime score.

Halftime proved to be a refreshing break for the Golden Tornadoes fueling more big plays. Less than three minutes into the third quarter an eight play 77 yard drive was capped by a touchdown run for Kellen Mackey followed by a Gardner kick. Later in the quarter Lemuel Fuller made a three yard run after a six play 55 yard drive for Geneva′s last touchdown of the night.

On the defensive side of the ball, Dillon Goodell lead with ten tackles followed by John Onufer with seven and Thomas Benyo with six. Geneva allowed just 248 total yards while racking up close to 500 yards of its own on the offensive side of the ball. A defense that allowed 56 points against this same Frostburg State team in last year's season opener, yielded just a field goal and came away with three interceptions on the night.

Geneva will enjoy defending its home field yet again next week against the Bethany Bison under the lights at 8 p.m.
