Geneva College, through an academic partnership between the Office of Student Leadership Development and the Department of Leadership Studies, is now offering a minor in leadership studies. A combination of new and existing courses, the 19-credit minor is designed to impart a strong base for leadership skills and prepares students in all majors to serve as leaders in their fields.

The program was initiated by Brian Jensen, Director of Student Leadership Development, and Dr. Jim Dittmar, Chair of the Department of Leadership Studies.

Jensen says, "In 2000, University of California, Los Angeles, released a report of compiled research from Drs. Helen and Alexander Astin. They concluded that every student has the potential to be a leader; leadership cannot be separated from values; leadership skills must be taught; and in today′s world, every student needs leadership skills. I can honestly say that every Geneva student would benefit from adding this minor to their Geneva College repertoire."

Required courses include Communication & Culture; Work, Vocation, and Leadership; and the Leadership Studies Capstone course. A host of course options that can be chosen from include Social Change, Business Ethics, and Principles of Management.

"A brand new course that will be a requirement for the minor and will be offered for the first time this coming spring semester is Introduction to Leadership Development,′" states Brian Jensen, who will teach the course, as well as a new leadership practicum.

Further information on the course listings can be found here.

Students who are interested in pursuing this minor, or in taking LDR 200 as an elective course, can speak with their advisors or contact Brian Jensen at bcjensen@geneva.edu.
