Beaver Falls, PA - The Geneva women′s volleyball team knew Saturday′s match against Westminster was going to be big but they could not have imagined how close it would be. The Westminster Titans came into the match holding onto fourth place in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference (PAC) while the Golden Tornadoes were standing firm in the third slot. After five arduous sets, Geneva earned the 3-2 victory and sent Westminster packing. The victory lifts Geneva′s PAC record to an impressive 14-2 and overall record of 20-9.
The day started out with the Golden Tornadoes handily winning the first set 25-13 but Westminster answered with an almost identical score in the second set defeating Geneva 25-14. From that point on it was an outright battle as each set following would be determined by less than three points. The Titans captured the third set 25-23 forcing the Golden Tornadoes to step up and win the fourth 25-22 tying the match up 2-2 and sending the teams into a fifth set. Westminster started strong in the final set holding an 8-2 lead but was unable to remain consistent as Geneva′s offense took over and won 15-12.
The victory against the Westminster Titans was accomplished with several standout playmakers. Geneva′s Brie Dickson played tremendously with 13 digs throughout the match and four aces all of which came in the fourth set. The Golden Tornado offense had four players who contributed 10 or more kills with Ashley Davis leading the way with 14 while Rachel Netherland had 13 and Olivia Test with 10. Deanna Briody continues to smash the career assist record as she added another 45 against Westminster while also aiding with a team high 14 digs.
Thursday the Golden Tornadoes will travel to Chatham for a 7 p.m. match before returning home to host Bethany, who currently maintains a perfect PAC record on Saturday for a 7 p.m. start for Senior Night.
