The Genevans, the student choir of Geneva College, will perform its annual Christmas Concert at the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver Falls on Friday and Saturday, December 6-7, 2013 at 7 p.m.genevans.jpg

The concert, themed "Birth of a King," will feature fanfares, trumpets, and the Hallelujah Chorus. The choir will be conducted by Dr. David Kenneth Smith, now in his second season as director.

During the concert, the congregation will be invited to join in singing carols such as "Joy to the World" and a new arrangement of "Thou didst leave Thy Throne and Thy Kingly Crown." The program will also include sacred pieces by Rutter, Britten, Haydn, selections from Handel's "Messiah" and will feature the women's ensemble "Grace Notes," the double barbershop quartet "Eight Bells" and three solo performances. The "Choral Fanfare on Psalm 24," a composition by Geneva College Bible Professor Dr. Byron Curtis, will be sung from the balconies to begin the second half of the program.

The centerpiece of The Genevans′ concert will be Mendelssohn′s double choir setting of Psalm 2, in which God the Father declares that He has enthroned His Son as King in Zion. "The Genevans are eager to bring this exciting program of coronation music to their audiences. It's not just pretty music, though. The central message of our concert is two-fold, comfort and conviction: Christ is King, and sovereign over all-what a comfort. But then we must each ask, ‘Who is on the throne of my life?′" said Smith.

"Having been a part of the Genevans now for four years, our annual Christmas concert has remained my favorite and most anticipated concert of the year. Our 70-member student choir has an amazing sound that is beautifully presented in the First Presbyterian Church of Beaver Falls, which is an acoustically awe-inspiring cathedral-type building," said Robert Jinks, president of The Genevans. "For being a 20-minute walk or five-minute drive from Geneva, this is a great concert that is easy to get to. I encourage you to come enjoy the music and help us celebrate the birth of our King!"

The Genevans choir is heir to a tradition of choral singing dating from the early years of the college over a century and a half ago. The mission of the choir expresses Geneva′s belief that music, as one of God′s finest gifts, meets a deep, universal need in people. The choir′s repertoire is broad and varied, reflecting the belief that "all of life, always and everywhere, is life in the presence of God."

Admission to the concert is free. An offering will be collected to support the international music ministry of The Genevans, particularly as they look to their upcoming 21-day tour to the Philippines and Malaysia in May 2014. Donations of all sizes are welcome and appreciated. For more information, please call 724-847-6660.
