Wooster, OH- The Golden Tornadoes Women′s Basketball team traveled to Ohio on Wednesday seeking their first win of the season against the College of Wooster. Coming into the game with an 0-2 record, the Golden Tornadoes battled hard but a tough shooting night proved costly as they fell to the Fighting Scots 82-67.
Despite shooting only 36 percent from the floor in the first half, Geneva played its best half of basketball of the season en route to a 32-31 halftime lead against Wooster. Miranda Heaney, Nicole Hyland and Heidi Mann led Geneva as they stymied the Fighting Scots through the first 20 minutes of play. Geneva′s solid first half defense held Wooster to a 34 percent mark from the field.
Unfortunately for the Golden Tornadoes, Wooster caught fire in the second half. Outscoring Geneva 51-35 in the final 20 minutes, the Fighting Scots shot a blazing 61 percent from the field as they distanced themselves from Geneva before taking the game 82-67. Geneva compiled a stellar 23 bench points in the contest led by sophomore Heidi Mann who went 6-12 from the field and 4-9 from the stripe for 16 points. Freshman guards Miranda Heaney and Nicole Hyland also led the Tornadoes offensive attack with 17 and 16 points respectively. Hyland added to her impressive stat line with 9 rebounds on the night.
Starting in the front court, Samantha Fisher scored five points but struggled with foul trouble throughout the night which contributed to Geneva being out-rebounded 54-41 and Wooster scoring 14 second chance points on the night. Rachel Collins paced Wooster with 19 points and Sydney Grier posted 15 of her own in the win for the Fighting Scots.
The Golden Tornadoes will now travel to Houghton to battle the Highlanders on Saturday at 6 p.m. as they attempt to find the winning recipe in their young season. The loss brings Geneva overall record to 0-3. With the win, Wooster improves to 3-0.
