SMB_2140_W480.jpgBeaver Falls, PA - The Geneva College Women′s Basketball program comes into the 2013-2014 campaign  with their sights set on moving forward. After a difficult 2012-13 season that ended in an overall record of 3-22, the Golden Tornadoes are only looking forward as they strive to build around a talented group of women.

Under the tutelage of Head Coach Lori Wynn, Geneva will need to improve both offensively and defensively as they were outscored by an average of 16 points per game during the 2012-13 season. Averaging only 45.6 points per game offensively, the Golden Tornadoes hope they have developed the talent to improve their scoring ability. Forgetting what lies behind, Coach Wynn emphasizes the importance of creating a winning culture.

Led by only three seniors and one junior, Geneva will be relying on many of their young players to make an immediate impact in the early going. Averaging 5.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game in the low post last year, Samantha Fisher highlights the Geneva front court. Thankfully for Geneva, their highest scoring player and back court leader, Heidi Mann, is only a sophomore. Averaging 12.4 points per game and almost five rebounds as a freshman, Mann will be relied on heavily to lead Geneva′s offensive attack.

With such a young team, Geneva will also rely on their four incoming freshmen to provide a spark off the bench and possibly even in the starting lineup. Look for freshman guard Nicole Hyland, from Penn Trafford High School, to make an impact in the early going for the Golden Tornadoes. In the words on Coach Wynn, the freshman class is expected to “learn in a hurry” but she sees serious promise in the first year class.

As Geneva′s Women′s Basketball team seeks to move forward on the court, their team motto also reaches much further than the confines of the hard wood. As Coach Wynn stated, “At the beginning of this season all the women were given a black and gold bracelet with ‘Forward′ on one side and ‘Philippians 3:14′ on the other.  This is to serve as a daily reminder to each of us what our goal is for this season; continue to move forward, not only for our team, but for the ‘goal to which God has called me′.”

The greatest teams are often built on bonds that are formed off the court. For this team, Coach Wynn hopes the bonds that were formed off the court can translate to moving forward and taking positive steps as a program on the court as well.

Geneva begins their season at the Carnegie Mellon Tournament on November 15th at 6pm.
