Beaver Falls, PA - The Golden Tornadoes Men′s Basketball team returned to the court after a weekend off to host the Nittany Lions of Penn State Altoona at Metheny Fieldhouse. After a tough loss in its conference opener, Geneva found a way to get back to its winning ways in a gritty performance on Monday Night. After a sluggish first half, the Golden Tornadoes put together the right possessions at the right time to defeat the Nittany Lions by a final score of 73-68.
Geneva trailed PSU-Altoona 39-35 at the half after a sluggish first frame that featured inconsistent and timid offensive possessions. Dominated in the low post, the Golden Tornadoes kept themselves in the game with timely three point field goals by Tyler Harbison and a late run that brought them to within four. Harbison led Geneva with 11 points on 4-9 shooting in the first half.
The Golden Tornadoes quickly turned the tide in the second half as they put together a mini-run to take the lead 45-44 highlighted by a big time three ball and a fast break layup by freshman sensation Chaese Vaudrin with 15 minutes left in the contest. Geneva and PSU-Altoona traded blows throughout the second half as each team grabbed a slim lead on many occasions. As the half wore on, the Golden Tornadoes wore down the Nittany Lions with countless inside drives and found themselves at the free throw stripe 19 times in the second half alone. Geneva pulled away in the final minute as both Vaudrin and Tyler Damazo drained clutch free throws to ice the game for Geneva at 73-68.
Harbison enjoyed another fruitful night from beyond the arc as he shot 5-11 from downtown for 17 total points on the night. Chaese Vaudrin once again paced the Tornadoes with 19 points, seven rebounds and a tremendous eight assists. Trevor York contributed a solid 15 points while Tyler Damazo added nine points and 12 boards for Geneva. The Golden Tornadoes shot 38% from the floor in the contest and went 16-26 from the stripe. Evan Greening paced the Nittany Lions with an excellent 22 points and 13 rebounds.
Geneva returns to the hardwood on Saturday night when they play host to the Bethany College Bisons at 8 p.m. The dramatic win brings Geneva′s overall record to 4-4 (0-1). With the loss, PSU-Altoona drops to 2-5.
