Beaver Falls, PA- The Geneva Women′s Basketball team opened up play in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference as they hosted Thiel College on Wednesday evening. After a rough stretch of games to start the season, the Golden Tornadoes fought hard in their first conference match but were ultimately upended by the Tomcats by a final score of 68-60.

With an extremely young starting lineup that featured two freshman and one sophomore, the Golden Tornadoes struggled heavily in the first frame. Geneva shot just 5-24 from the floor in the first half while the Tomcats shot a solid 50%. However, the Golden Tornadoes stingy defense was able to keep the game close by forcing a myriad of turnovers. At the half, Thiel led Geneva only 26-17. As the final score shows, the second half held a much different brand of basketball.

Sophomore star guard Heidi Mann played her best game of the year, specifically in the second half, as she lit up the Tomcats from the floor in every facet of the game. Scoring from the paint, beyond the arc and at the charity stripe, Mann tantalized the Tomcats with solid play on both ends of the floor. However, despite Mann′s dominant performance, Geneva was unable to put together consistently solid offensive trips as Thiel stretched their lead to as many as 19 points in the second half. The Golden Tornadoes were able to close the gap as the game wound down but were unable to put the finishing touches on what would have been an unprecedented comeback. In the end, Thiel closed out Geneva by a final score of 68-60.

Geneva was able to force an unbelievable 30 turnovers in the contest but only converted those turnovers into 25 points. The Tomcats held a tremendous 54-22 advantage in overall rebounds which eventually proved to be too much of a deficiency for Geneva to overcome.

Heidi Mann finished the contest with 24 points, 6 assists and a shocking 10 steals. Freshman Nicole Hyland contributed another solid double digit scoring effort with 10 points. Samantha Fisher added eight points and seven rebounds for the Tornadoes. Jaclyn Watkins paced the Tomcats with a game-high 25 points while Bethany Hines added 12.

The conference loss drops Geneva′s overall record to 0-6 (0-1). Thiel moves to 2-4 (1-0) with the win. Next on the schedule, Geneva will travel to Chatham University to battle the Cougars on Saturday at 2 p.m. as they search for their first win of the season.
