Geneva Softball Outlook for 2014; a call to Finish

gcsoftball13039.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- In the first year of NCAA and PAC eligibility, the Geneva College softball team captured its first conference title and ended the 2012 season at the NCAA regional tournament with an overall record of 30-19. In 2013, the Golden Tornadoes once again reached the PAC title game but fell just short of victory. This year the Golden Tornadoes look to finish like they did in 2012.

"We need to finish what we started" said Head coach Van Zanic. "After having a conference championship in 2012 anything less of a championship is short of accomplishing our goal. That may sound harsh but after experiencing being champions you can′t help but what that every year."

Coach Zanic is not alone feeling the effects of "conference title fever." The 2014 season is led by six seniors consisting of Christina Fuqua (Derwood, MD), Mackenzie Kemerer (Freedom, PA), Dana Schnitzel (Roslyn, PA), Ashley Davis (New Middletown, OH), Rachel Lee (Plum, PA), Brittany Clark (Washington, PA) and Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA) who are motivated to finish as champions not only in 2012 but their senior season as well.

Returning to the field for the Golden Tornadoes are the six motivated and unified seniors plus four Presidents′ Athletic Conference team members (Laura Beck (Canfield, PA), Samantha Johnson (Murrysville, PA), Ashley Davis, and Christina Fuqua), and a 2013 honorable mention Dayna Hicks (Beaver Falls, PA).

"This is a special year" says Zanic, "but ultimately success falls on pitching; it is the nature of the beast. I was pleasantly surprised by Sam last year after Julie (DiLonardo) graduated."

Supporting pitcher Johnson is a strong middle with veteran Fuqua on second, Davis at Shortstop and a depth of talent in the catcher position, including Taylor Yarletts (Wampum, PA) who has recovered from a season ending injuring late in the Florida games last season.

The Geneva softball season kicks off in the sunshine state at the Rebel Spring games (Winter Haven, FL) on March 10th at 3 p.m. against Greensboro.
