Beaver Falls, PA- Sophomore Heidi Mann (Evangelical Christian Academy, CO) continued her torrid scoring streak - she has now averaged over 20 points for the last six games - and Geneva led from start to finish, defeating Grove City for the first time in six years.
"Heidi is playing really well now but all of our players have things they do well," said Geneva coach Lori Wynn. "Sam (Fisher) gets us big rebounds, Mary (Keen) brings us intensity - they all bring something to the table."
In addition to her 20 points, Mann also had seven rebounds and three steals as the Golden Tornadoes improved their record to 4-18, 3-13 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference. On senior night, Samantha Fisher (Hopewell) had a game-high nine rebounds and scored five points. Also playing at home for the final time were Lydia Steele (Ford City), who scored nine points and Mary Keen (Northmor, OH), who scored three.
"Senior day can be a distraction," Wynn said. "But I think they handled it well - we know we have at least two more games so it′s not like it was their last game."
Geneva opened the scoring and never trailed, building to a 17-point halftime lead, 31-14, but Grove City wasn′t ready to concede. The Wolverines′ head coach is Chelle Simons Fuss, who spent a lot of time at Metheny Fieldhouse (she is still seventh on Geneva′s career scoring chart) and she had her charges mount a comeback but the closest they got was the eight-point final deficit. Grove City is now 7-16 and 5-11.
"In the first half, everything worked well," Wynn said. "We came out focused but we knew they′d come back. We′re getting the confidence to handle that now."
Geneva next plays Wednesday night at Washington & Jefferson at 6 p.m.
