gcbaseball13011.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- Chicago Cubs Hall of Fame shortstop/first baseman Ernie Banks was famous for saying "let′s play two." Geneva took his advice and built on it, playing a tripleheader (23 innings) against Bible Baptist, winning 9-1, 9-7, and 10-5 to improve to 6-12 on the season.

In the first game, Tyler Damazo (Blackhawk) had a three-run double in the first inning to open an early 4-0 lead. The Golden Tornadoes took advantage of nine walks to make Jake Debo (New Brighton) the winning pitcher. Donnie Tong (Tree of Life Christian, OH) had two runs batted in in the game.

In the second, Geneva built an 8-2 lead after three innings and extended it to 9-2 on a sixth inning home run by T.J. Lambert (Blackhawk) before Bible Baptist made the game exciting with five runs in the top of the seventh. Shane Wingard (Apollo-Ridge), Anthony Monteparte (Latrobe) and Adam Teets (Freedom) each had two hits for the Golden Tornadoes while Ian McDonald (West Shore Christian Academy, PA) recorded the win.

In the third game of the tripleheader, the two teams played a nine-inning game just to get more innings in and the Golden Tornadoes prevailed thanks to five runs in the bottom of the eighth. The first five batters in the inning scored with JC Ackerman (Worthington Christian, OH) and Ryan McGonigle (Apollo-Ridge) having back-to-back run scoring singles. McGonigle and Monteparte each had two hits and Wingard scored four times. The winning pitcher was Tanner Propst (Cumberland Valley Christian, PA).

"Bible Baptist is from eastern Pennsylvania and they′ve lost a ton of games to the weather," said Geneva coach Alan Sumner. "So when I said we′d be willing to play three games, they jumped at it.

"We have a large pitching staff and some guys haven′t had a chance to take the mound since Florida so that worked out well for us. We got the chance for a lot of young guys to get into game situations and guys on the mounds to work on some things.

"Hopefully, this will help us get ready for St. Vincent."

The Golden Tornadoes return to action Tuesday at St. Vincent′s.
