Ft. Pierce, FL - Pitching is supposed to be ahead of hitting early in the season and Geneva proved that Monday in Florida as four Geneva pitchers combined to allow just 12 hits in two games. However, Martin Luther (MN) pitchers allowed just five hits and the Golden Tornadoes suffered 4-1 and 3-1 losses.
"It′s tough, we come down here right out of the gym and nothing but hitting inside and play a team that has already played four games," said Geneva coach Alan Sumner. "But we did well for the first time we′re seeing live pitching.
"Our pitchers pitched well and we were in both games. Some of their runs scored on mistakes but we′re here to play and we′re getting the chance to play.
"When we come north, we′ll have a good idea of who we should be playing and be reading for the conference schedule."
In the opener, Geneva′s Ian McDonald (West Shore Christian Academy) struck out seven and allowed just five singles in five innings. In the nightcap. Caleb Kilgore (Apollo-Ridge) also allowed just five singles in five innings. Neither team managed an extra base hit.
Geneva will return to action Tuesday with a doubleheader against Hilbert (NY) College.
