Geneva baseball drops pair on St. Paddy’s Day

Baseball finished 1-9 after a busy spring break in the sunshine state

gcbaseball13219.jpgFort Pierce, FL - The calendar said St. Patrick′s Day but on the baseball diamond at Fort Pierce, Florida, it was definitely St. Mary′s′ day as Geneva twice outhit its hosts but lost both games, 8-5 and 4-3.

The Golden Tornadoes pounded out 25 hits on the day but fell short on the scoreboard. The attack was led by junior Shane Wingard (Apollo-Ridge) who had six hits on the day -two in the first and four in the second. He drove two of the three runs in the second, the second with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, a hit that sent the tying run to third but the Golden Tornadoes couldn′t get the run home.

Andy Santana (Desert Christian, Dominican Republic) had two hits in both games while Ryan McGonigle (Apollo-Ridge) had three hits in the opener. Also gathering a pair of hits in the first game were Jeremy Herzog (Freedom) and Donnie Tong (Tree of Life Christian, OH).

In the second game, Adam Teets (Freedom), by Aaron Witman (Shalom Christian Academy, PA), JC Ackerman (Worthington Christian, OH) each had two hits. Caleb Kilgore (Apollo-Ridge) was the hard luck loser in the second game, allowing just six hits in the complete game loss. Drew Nichols (Wilmington, PA) was the loser in the first game.

After finishing 1-9 on its Florida trip, Geneva now returns home with hopes to return to action on Friday at Thomas More, weather permitting.
