Jeffreys′ clutch hits lead Geneva baseball comeback In nightcap to split doubleheader with Westminster

gc-baseball-3-13-106.gifBeaver Falls, PA - Dan Jeffreys (Moon) led off the sixth inning with a single, keying a four-run inning that tied Geneva′s game with Westminster at 5-5. The sophomore catcher then had a one-out single in the bottom of the seventh, stole second, and eventually scored on a two-out single by Ryan McGonigle (Apollo-Ridge) to give the Golden Tornadoes a 6-5 comeback win. Both Jeffreys and McGonigle finished the game with three hits In that four-run sixth inning, the key hit was a two-out double by Shane Wingard (Apollo-Ridge) that drove home two runs.

The late rally made a winning pitcher of Caleb Metzler (Warwick, PA), who pitched the seventh inning, striking out two.

"Caleb struck out the first two guys he faced and the guys came into the dugout pumped up after a 1-2-3 inning," said Geneva coach Alan Sumner. "I told the guys we just had to keep swinging the bat and putting the ball into play.

"If you split, it feels better to win the second win, especially the way we came back."

In the first game, Geneva fell to Westminster 4-1 as Geneva manager just four hits. The Golden Tornadoes′ lone run came in the sixth inning when Tyler Damazo (Blackhawk) drove home Aaron Witman (Shalom Christian Academy, PA) who had doubled. Zack Ackerman (Worthington Christian, OH) pitched the last four innings and allowed just one run but Jeff Parker (Timothy Christian, NJ) picked up the loss.

With the split, Geneva is now 3-12 overall but 2-3 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference while Westminster is 5-9, 2-2.
