DSC0317.jpgWINTER HAVEN, FL - The second day of Geneva softball′s trip to Florida ended the same as the first - with a pair of losses - but head coach Van Zanic still likes what he sees. The Golden Tornadoes lost 9-3 to Washington (MD) and 3-1 to Illinois Wesleyan.

"These teams down here are the real deal," said Geneva head coach Van Zanic. "If we don′t play a complete game, we lose. But that′s why we play the best.

"We have a lot of work to do but we′ll be fine."

In the opener, Geneva fell behind 2-0 in the second inning, but took a short-lived lead with three runs in the top of the third inning on RBI singles by Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) and starting pitcher Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional). However, three runs in the bottom of the inning but Illinois Wesleyan ahead again and four runs in the sixth made the final score more lop-sided than the game had been.

In the second game, Geneva′s Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA) pitched well but the Golden Tornadoes′ bats fell silent. Geneva scored its only run in the seventh when Madison Schantz (Allen East, OH) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. The run was unearned, as were two of the runs Hinds allowed.

The softball team will return to action Wednesday with games against Albion College (MI) and Wheaton College (IL).
