Geneva softball opens northern season With doubleheader win despite challenges

DSC0317.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- It was only two hours before game time and Geneva′s Physical Plant Department was preparing the field with snowplows but the day got better for the Golden Tornadoes, sweeping Penn State Behrend, 6-2 and 4-3.

"We played well all around in the first game," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "But we struggled in the second game and had to come back."

In the nightcap, Geneva trailed 3-0 after five and a half innings before scoring a single run in the bottom of the sixth but breaking into the scoring column didn′t leave the Golden Tornadoes optimistic - they had two more runners in scoring position with no outs and left them there.

"We started out with pinch hit singles by Dayna Hicks (Blackhawk) and Mackenzie Kemerer (Freedom)," Zanic said. "We got the first run on a bases-loaded walk to Lucia Fee (Mohawk), tied the game on a ground out by Laura Beck (Canfield, OH) and, with two outs, Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD) won the game with a single. It was a total team effort."

Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA) got the win, scattering six hits over seven innings and Beck had two runs batted in.

In the first game, Geneva pitcher Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional) was the standout both on the mound and at the plate. She allowed no earned runs in her seven innings and struck out nine. At the plate, she had a single, double, and walk in three trips to the plate, driving home two runs.

Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) had two hits, including a double and drove home a run while Fee had two singles and a run batted in.

The Golden Tornadoes, now 6-7, hope to open Presidents′ Athletic Conference play Tuesday at Washington & Jefferson.
