Registration is now open for Geneva College′s charity dodgeball tournament. For two dollars per person, teams of 8-10 players can battle for dominance on April 7 and 8, starting at 10 p.m. in Metheny Fieldhouse. Sign-up sheets for the event are available in the Brig and Alexander′s Dining Hall.
All proceeds will support the Big Brothers Big Sisters nonprofit organization.
The event is part of Geneva′s celebration of Division III week, a "positive opportunity for all individuals associated with Division III to observe and celebrate the impact of athletics and of student-athletes on the campus and surrounding community," according to sponsor NCAA′s website. The 2014 DIII week begins on Monday, April 7.
The dodgeball tournament at Geneva is sponsored by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), an organization comprising over 20 student-athletes as well as faculty advisor women′s soccer head coach Linda Sumner.
"As a SAAC group," Sumner states, "we try to generate a student-athlete voice within the institution and organize community service efforts. As busy as our student athletes are, they do a great job of getting involved and doing what they can to support other teams on campus and working together in the community."
Current SAAC president, senior Caleb Kilgore, says, "We are really looking forward to the dodgeball tournament. We feel that this is a fun way to get not just student-athletes involved, but the whole campus in giving back to the community of Beaver Falls."
This school year, the SAAC collected money for Tiger Pause Food Bank in Beaver Falls in September and in October, worked with the Wellness Committee on the 5K Walk and Run for breast cancer awareness. The SAAC also sponsored a blood drive with the Red Cross on November 21.
