McElhattan earned his Bachelor of Science in Environmental Resource Management from The Pennsylvania State University in University Park, PA, and also holds an MBA from the Tepper School of Business at Carnegie Mellon University. Prior to his work at Industrial Scientific, McElhattan held positions as both a Water/Wastewater Sales & Support Specialist for Sheridan Safety (Dayton, Ohio) and as a Field Sales Representative for SAFECO with a territory in Eastern Pennsylvania and New Jersey.

The Serving Leader Award is given annually by the Department of Leadership Studies at Geneva College to a person of faith who represents and lives out the principles described in the book, The Serving Leader, by John Stahl-Wert. They include "building on strength; blazing trails; raising the bar; upending the pyramid, and running to great purpose."
