gcsoftball13384.jpgWASHINGTON, PA - Geneva and Washington & Jefferson had played eight scoreless innings in the second game of a doubleheader and daylight was drawing to a close.

"There was plenty of daylight when the ninth inning started," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "But the ninth inning was long. It was getting pretty dark by the time we were done."

And when it was done, Geneva had prevailed 3-1 to gain a split. In the ninth, Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD) broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single, the second run scored on a wild pitch, and Laura Beck (Canfield, OH) closed the scoring with a double, scoring Fuqua. Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional) made the runs stand up, allowing her first run in the ninth with two outs, then closed the game with her fifth strikeout. She′s a junior.

"That′s what a stopper is for," Zanic said. "She′s one of the top pitchers in the conference and showed it. W&J is a very good team and this was a huge game for us."

Fuqua, Beck, Clara Sevy (Chapelgate Christian, MD), and Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) led Geneva′s 12 hit attack with two each. In the first game, Geneva fell behind 3-0 in the first inning and could never come back but Fuqua and Davis each had two hits in that game as well.

Geneva, now 7-8 and 1-1 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference, returns to play Friday at Baldwin-Wallace, weather permitting.
