Behind Samantha Johnson, Geneva softball sweeps its second straight conference road doubleheader

312101.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- Geneva improved to 7-1 in Presidents′ Athletic Conference play thanks in great part to the strong right arm of sophomore Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional). In the first game, Johnson pitched nine shutout innings as the Golden Tornadoes were forced to go extra innings to defeat St. Vincent 2-0.

In the second, a five-run fourth inning took the pressure off and Johnson pitched the first five shutout innings of a 7-0 win. For the day, she pitched 14 innings, allowed nine hits and allowed just one runner to reach as far as third base.

"That′s the best I′ve seen her pitch," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "They weren′t squaring up on her pitches at all. It was really big to get two straight doubleheader sweeps on the road."

In the first game, Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA) got the big hit, driving home the first run and scoring the second. In the second game, Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) and Laura Beck (Canfield, OH) each had run-scoring doubles in the five-run fourth. Davis also had a triple and a single while Beck and Hinds each had two hits.

Geneva, 13-10 overall, hosts Case Western Reserve on Monday in non-conference action.
