Geneva softball splits with Bethany; Fuqua hitting star of first game

gcsoftball13144.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- Geneva improved to 8-2 in Presidents′ Athletic Conference, setting up a potential first place showdown with Thomas More on Saturday by splitting with Bethany, 6-2 and 2-13.

A bases-loaded double by Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD) in the fourth inning gave the Golden Tornadoes all the runs they would need as sophomore Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional) made the runs stand up.

In the nightcap, though, Bethany scored eight runs in the first inning - seven of them with two outs, and there was no recovery for the Golden Tornadoes. Geneva′s highlights were limited to two hits by Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) and a home run by Laura Beck (Canfield, OH).

"There is no momentum in softball," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "We were feeling good and then a couple of bloop hits, a misplay, and we′re down 8-0.

"Our other conference loss, we gave up too many runs in the first inning to W&J so maybe there′s a lesson to be learned, we shall see."

Friday, Geneva travels to Chatham for a doubleheader, setting up a showdown with first-place Thomas More on Saturday. The Saints finished play today with a 9-1 conference record.
