Geneva softball splits battle for first; Remains a game back of Thomas More

gcsoftball13039.jpgBeaver Falls, PA-For the time it took between games of the double header, Geneva and Thomas More were tied for first place in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference with 11-2 records. Geneva had pulled into the tie with a 3-2 win over the Saints, scoring three in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI triple by Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD), followed by a home run by Laura Beck (Canfield, OH).

However, the first place tie lasted only as long as the second game as Thomas More no-hit the Golden Tornadoes and won 11-0.

"In the first game, it was two of the best pitchers in the conference going head to head," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "We didn′t do a lot against them until Christina′s big hit and then Laura added on. Defensively, we played well and made all the plays.

"In the second game, we didn′t play well, gave them too many outs and it snowballed. It would have been nice to win two but it was still big to get one, it puts us in great position for tie-breakers. We beat their number one and we now know we can, but we still have eight games this week before we think about the playoffs."

Geneva, now 17-12 overall and 11-3 in conference, plays two non-conference games against Hiram on Monday.
