Geneva softball sweeps Westminster to clinch second seed in PAC Tournament; Seniors win 100th and 101st

gc-sb-4-14-028.jpgNew Wilmington, PA - It took two extra-inning games at arch-rival Westminster but Geneva was able to sweep, 7-2 in 12 innings and 5-4 in eight, to secure second seed in the conference tournament. The Presidents′ Athletic Conference tournament begins Thursday at Thomas More with Geneva playing 3rd-seeded Washington & Jefferson in the double-elimination tournament.

Adding excitement to the day senior Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) had the game winning hit in the first game and senior Brittany Clark (Trinity, PA) had the game-tying hit in the bottom of the seventh of the second, setting up winning pitcher Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA) with the game winning hit in the eighth. The two wins gave the senior class 101 wins in their careers at Geneva.

"We battled," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "But we were able to come up with the hits when we needed them. We did what we needed but Thomas More won their games, too, so we′ll have to hit the road and be ready for W&J."

In the first game, Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional) pitched all 12 innings, limiting Westminster to just eight hits while striking out four. Geneva broke open the game in the 12th on Davis′ single with Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD) and Laura Beck (Canfield, OH) following with two runs batted in each, Beck′s on a home run. Johnson, Beck, Fuqua, Hinds, and Mackenzie Kemerer (Freedom) each had three hits in the game while Clark had two.

In the second, Westminster looked to be pulling the upset until Clark′s hit in the seventh inning - her fourth of the day. Hinds ended the game in the following inning.

Geneva will enter the playoffs with a 21-14 record, 15-3 in the PAC.
