Johnson′s arm, Beck′s bat leads Geneva softball to sweep of Waynesburg

gcsoftball13086.jpgWaynesburg, PA - Samantha Johnson (Franklin Regional) pitched a shutout in the first game of a double header with Waynesburg to lead Geneva to a 10-0 five-inning win over Waynesburg and Laura Beck (Canfield, OH) pounded two home runs including a grand slam that highlighted a Geneva comeback as the Golden Tornadoes prevailed 11-8 in the nightcap. Geneva is now 9-8 overall and 3-1 in Presidents′ Athletic Conference action.

"The first game was our most complete game of the year, but the momentum didn′t carry over," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "We were down 6-0 after four innings but came back well."

The comeback seemed anything but a sure thing early. The Golden Tornadoes did score two in the fifth but left the bases loaded. The sixth inning, though, Geneva scored six times - one on a solo shot by Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) and four on Beck′s grand slam. Another two run shot by Beck added insurance in the seventh.

In the first game, freshman Lucinda Fee (Mohawk, PA) provided the power with a three-run shot in the first inning and Johnson made it stand up. It was Geneva′s first home run of the season.

Mackenzie Kemerer (Freedom) also drove home three in the first game, then added a pair of hits in the nightcap. In the second game, Geneva had 15 hits as Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD) had three hits and scored three times.

"We′re a little shorthanded due to injuries so we needed Samantha to pitch both," Zanic said. "Getting out of the first game in five innings really helped.

"It was good to see the offense come alive. I had just said in practice the other day that it was time for a home run and we hot four."

Geneva returns to play Wednesday at Grove City.
