From the thrill of victory… And in just 24 hours

2014SoftballTeam.jpgCrestview Hills, KY - After the first day of action at the Presidents′ Athletic Conference softball championships, Geneva′s squad was on the top of the world. The only unbeaten team in the double-elimination field, Geneva had to win just one more game to secure the conference championship.

But it didn′t happen. Washington & Jefferson dispatched top seed and host Thomas More in the first game of the day and rode that momentum through two games against the Golden Tornadoes, defeating them 1-0 and 6-3.

"Their pitcher got really hot and, although it′s hard to win three games in a day, once they got the momentum, they kept it," said Geneva coach Van Zanic. "Give them credit, they′re a good team."

W&J carried its momentum into their second game, scoring the game′s only run in the very first inning. Geneva′s Samantha Johnson and Washington & Jefferson′s Krista McCartney matched zeroes the rest of the way but the damage to Geneva′s title hopes was done. Only two Geneva players got hits in the first game as seniors Ashley Davis (Springfield Local, OH) and Mackenzie Kemerer (Freedom) each had two.

In the second, Geneva took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning but W&J answered with five in the third and the Golden Tornadoes′ attempts at comebacks came up short. Davis had a home run for Geneva, Laura Beck (Canfield, OH) had two hits, and Christina Fuqua (Richard Montgomery, MD) hit her fourth double of the tournament. Those three were named to the all-tournament team.

"It′s very disappointing to get in that position and not win," Zanic said. "We had some success against both of the teams we could have played today but they made us work and we ran into the same problems we had during the season - defensive lapses and big innings.

"But our seniors had great careers they can be proud of. This senior class has won 103 games and Ashley Davis won 99 in volleyball so she′ll graduate with 202 wins."

Geneva′s season ends with a 23-16 record.
