This year′s Beaver Falls Community Crime Watch Day held at Geneva College will again offer free educational family fun topped off with fireworks, which has made it a popular attraction for community members. But this sixth annual event, held on Saturday, August 2 from 5:30-9 p.m., will offer a new feature - a parade from Tiger Alley at the Beaver Falls High School up to the Geneva campus to kick off the festivities in an exciting way.
The 5 p.m. parade will start at the Network of Hope′s Hope for the Valley event at the Beaver Falls High School, which begins at 2 p.m., and includes a book bag giveaway for 225 first and second graders. The parade will feature community leaders and members walking and riding on fire trucks, courtesy of the Beaver Falls Fire Department, up 18th Avenue to the Geneva College campus for the start of the Beaver Falls Community Crime Watch Day event.
Beaver Falls Community Crime Watch Day Co-chair Regina Jones noted that a parade connecting the two community events is a natural outcome of the two community-oriented events being held on the same day. "The Hope for the Valley event is a great outreach for the churches of Beaver Falls, and the Beaver Falls Community Crime Watch Day brings together families to focus on safety and community building. It makes sense to bridge these two positive neighborhood events with a parade, creating one longer festival for Beaver Falls."
The Beaver Falls Community Crime Watch Day also offers crafts, face painting and games for the young and old alike. There will be celebrity mascots such as the Pirate Parrot, city leaders and music throughout the afternoon. A new attraction this year will be clicks4acause, a photo booth offering fun props and backdrops for fun photos.
In addition to these activities, this non-profit event offers guests an inside look at local safety and law enforcement. Those attending have the opportunity to interact with officers from local and state police departments, bomb squad officers, local firemen, city council members, members of the District Attorney's Office and military recruitment officers.
Presentations about small fire extinguishing, military vehicles, canine demonstrations, fire trucks rescue vehicles, fire safety house and bicycle safety will be performed. Representatives from local non-profit organizations will also be in attendance. Beaver Falls Community Crime Watch Day concludes with a Zambelli fireworks display.
In 2009, the Beaver Falls Police Department began this event as a way to better educate and interact with the local community. The support for this event has helped the Community Crime Watch Day grow, including multiple sponsors from the surrounding communities.
