DMDLOGO.JPGOn Wednesday, October 15, Geneva College will participate in Disability Mentoring Day. On this day, organizations across the country host high school students with disabilities for hands-on programs and job shadowing.

"Disability Mentoring Day is a fantastic way to show local high school students who have disabilities a sort of peak behind the curtain of what it looks like to work at a college," says Tom Pyle, Director of the ACCESS office. "It shows different possibilities and career options the students can pursue after they graduate high school. From feedback that I have received, it is always a very rewarding experience for the staff members who have participated in the past."

The high school students will be assigned to offices that match some of their stated interests. There will also be a brief training session before the event to help mentors understand how to interact with students who have certain disabilities.

"For such a small time commitment, the experience was rewarding," said Lindsay Ropp, a graduate assistant for the ACCESS Office who participated last year.

"At the end of the day, the high school students gave us so much more than we could ever give them," said Ryan Holt, Director of the Student Activities office. "I would strongly encourage anyone to jump in and be a part of this great experience."

Geneva is seeking staff volunteer mentors who are willing to have one or two students job shadow them for a few hours on this day. Geneva staff members who are interested in participating in Disability Mentoring Day should contact Tom Pyle at 724-847-5005 or tcpyle@geneva.edu.
