Geneva rebounds from opening loss in big way

SMB_7880.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- In his 22nd year, Geneva head coach Geno DeMarco always maintained that a team′s biggest improvement came between the first and second week. He can now point to the 2014 season as proof of that as the Golden Tornadoes came home and handled Grove City with ease, 42-0 after opening with a loss at Frostburg State last week.

Geneva controlled the game from the outset, shutting down Grove City′s offense and breaking into the scoring column on a 24-yard pass from freshman Aaron Channing (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) to Dylan Jones (Jr., New Castle, PA/Laurel) in the first quarter. That play was set up by a 50-yard punt return by freshman Nate Cannon (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Kings Academy), who was named PAC and ECAC Special Teams Player of the Week last week.

In the second quarter, Channing completed a 45-yard scoring pass to senior Josh Guiser (Fayette City, PA/Frazier) in the opening minute. Then freshman defensive lineman Lamar Taft (New Brighton) - all 245 pounds of him - took a page from Cannon′s book and intercepted a pass to set up a 2-yard run by Brandon Hacker (Columbiana, OH). Freshman Ryan Mosura (Masury, OH/Brookfield) closed the first half scoring on an 8-yard run.

In the second half, Geneva opened the scoring with the Channing-Guiser connection (seven yards) in the third quarter again, this one from seven yards. Hacker scored his second of the game in the fourth quarter on a 34-yard run to close the scoring.

It was Geneva′s first shutout since a 49-0 win over Taylor in 2005.

Geneva returns to action next Saturday at Waynesburg at 1:30.
