Geneva comes close, but not close enough, to ending road losing streak

GenC91314274.jpgWaynesburg, PA- For the second time in its current seven-game losing streak, Geneva has fallen in overtime, this time 44-38 in double overtime at Waynesburg.

The game was back and forth all afternoon with Geneva averting a regulation loss with seven seconds left in regulation when Scott Lewis′ 32-yard field goal missed.

Waynesburg scored first in the first overtime but Geneva freshman quarterback Aaron Channing (Horsham, PA/Hatboro-Horsham) threw his fifth touchdown pass of the game, this time to senior Josh Guiser (Frazier/Fayette City) to tie the game. In the second overtime, Geneva had the ball first but had a field goal blocked and Waynesburg′s Carter Hill threw to Zac Capan to seal Waynesburg′s first overtime victory since 1997. Waynesburg is now 3-0, 1-0 in the Presidents′ Athletic Conference while Geneva falls to 1-2, 0-1.

Channing was a definite highlight for the Golden Tornadoes, though, completing 22 of 31 passses for 317 yards. Through three games, he has completed 66 of 96 for 766 yards, nine touchdowns and has yet to throw an interception. His five touchdown passes tied the second best single game effort by a Geneva quarterback, behind only Zach Hayward′s seven against Frostburg two years ago.

His touchdown passes were completed to Guiser - 68 and 9 yards; junior Lemuel Fuller (Forest Park, GA) - 64 yards; sophomore Devin Kelosky (Ellwood City/Riverside) - 20; and junior Dylan Jones (Jr., New Castle, PA/Laurel) - two yards.

Channing′s success allowed his wide receivers to achieve milestones as well. Fuller caught the 100th pass of his career and now has 103 and Guiser surpassed the 1,000-yard mark in his career with his first quarter scoring pass.

Freshman Nate Cannon (Palm Beach Gardens, FL/Kings Academy) also had a big game, intercepting two passes. After three games, he now has four interceptions and scored on a 95-yard punt return in the opener.

Geneva returns to action next Saturday at Carnegie-Mellon University at 1:00.
