Geneva finishes 2-0 after facing Waynesburg and Grove City

gc-vball-9-14-289.jpgBeaver Falls, PA- Geneva finished 2-0 after competing in a Presidents′ Athletic Conference tri-match at Waynesburg, PA against Waynesburg and Grove City. Geneva defeated the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets 25-15, 25-15, 25-18 and the Grove City Wolverines 25-19, 25-17, 25-19. The duel victories raises the Golden Tornadoes overall record to 10-5, 5-1 in the league.

Grace Hayes (Westminster, MD/Westminster) led Geneva′s offense with eight kills. Rachel Netherland (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) and Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) each finished with seven kills apiece. Defensively, Geneva′s Alexis Ritson (Irwin, PA/Hempfield) collected 10 digs. Netherland finished the three set game with 19 assists. Around the net Erin Smith (Sewickley, PA/Ambridge) made three solo blocks.

Against Grove City, Hughes put down 10 kills supported by Marissa Naples (Cortland, OH/Lakeview) and Olivia Test (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian) with eight kills each and Netherland with seven.

"It was a very competive match with Grove City. We were neck and neck in the early teens- 13,14,15" said co-head coach Curt Conser. "The setters did well to spread the wealth."

Naples set for 18 assists, Netherland set for 16 assists.

"Our block got better as the match went on."

Smith led the GTs blocking game with four, Netherland and Naples right behind her with three.

On defense, Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) worked for 15 digs.

Next Geneva takes on its fifth top 20 nationally ranked team. Wednesday September 24th at 7 p.m. Geneva hosts the NCAA DIII fifth in the nation, Mt. Union College.
