Volleyball finishes 2-0 at tournament; first win against top 20

Volleyball finishes 2-0 at tournament; first win against top 20 national team since NCAA Division III days

gcvball914114.jpgAlliance, OH - Geneva volleyball traveled to Mt. Union to face Defiance (3-1; 25-23, 18-25, 25-18, 26-24) and DePauw University (3-2; 18-25, 25-23, 25-17, 19-25, 19-17) finished 2-0, raising the Golden Tornadoes overall record to 12-6. The two match victory day included Geneva volleyball′s first win over a top 20 nationally ranked NCAA Division III team since Geneva transitioned into the NCAA Division III.

At 2 p.m. Geneva battled against Defiance for a 3-1 final. Down 24-21 in the fourth set, Geneva′s co-head coach Curt Conser expressed he was, "thrilled with the last minute comeback." Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) led Geneva′s offense with 16 kills supported by Courtney Aldridge (Warren, OH/Labrae) with nine kills. Olivia Test (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian) contributed six kills and six blocks in the win. Rachel Netherland (Aliquippa, PA/Central Valley) finished the four sets with 27 total assists. On defense, Alexis Ritson (Irwin, PA/Hempfield) collected 17 dig.

Geneva took on 20th ranked, DePauw at 4:30 p.m. Conser highlighted, "We served smarter and better than we have of late." "Bri Dickson on the service line served effectively and created opportunities that we took."

In addition to her serving game Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) earned 28 digs behind dig leader Ritson with 35 digs.

"We played really well defensively but so did DePauw."

On offense, Hughes put down 25 kills against DePauw.

"She carried a big burden offensively."

Erin Smith (Sewickley, PA/Ambridge) contributed six blocks in the five game match. Netherland earned 38 assists in the setter position.

On Tuesday September 30 Geneva will travel down the road to Westminster for a 7 p.m. match.
