Volleyball finishes day one at tournament with 3-0 win over Manchester

gcvballN.jpgFredericksburg, VA- Geneva volleyball traveled to Fredericksburg, VA for a weekend long tournament hosted by the University of Mary Washington. Geneva faced nationally ranked (19th) Christopher Newport at 4 p.m. and continued play at 6 p.m. against Manchester (IN). Geneva dropped a 3-0 decision (25-16, 25-16, 28-26) to Christopher Newport. In response the GTs turned around for a win against Manchester (25-12, 25-22, 26-24). The day′s split lifts Geneva′s overall record to 4-4.

"We really played well in the third set against Christopher Newport" said co-head coach Curt Conser. "The third set was fun to watch. We played them tough."

Erin Smith (Sewickley, PA/Ambridge), Erica Hughes (North Jackson, OH/Jackson Milton) and Olivia Test (Negley, OH/Heartland Christian) all grabbed eight kills against Christopher Newport while Rachel Netherland contributed 23 assists.

In game two′s victory over Manchester, Grace Hayes′ (Westminster, MD/Westminster) efforts finalized the win after a game saving dig and final kill that won the match. Hughes lead the GTs in kills with ten, Hayes finished the match with eight kills after only two sets of action. On defense, Gabrielle Dickson (Brookfield, OH/Kennedy Catholic) earned nine digs, six in her first set alone. Netherland grabbed 20 assists.

Tomorrow Geneva faces Mary Washington at noon and Eastern at 2 p.m.
