Beaver Falls, PA– Geneva women’s soccer took the Waynesburg Yellow Jackets to overtime with a 4-4 score after regulation time. In less than four minutes in overtime the Yellow Jackets found the back of Geneva’s net for the fourth time off a corner kick header goal combo. The 5-4 overtime loss lowers Geneva’s overall to 2-15, 1-7 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.
Head coach Linda Sumner said, “I’m very proud of the way the ladies played tonight with another strong offensive performance but it is tough to lose in overtime."
The offensive explosion started in the sixth minute of game when Waynesburg’s Nikki Davis found her seventh goal of the season. Geneva answered with two goals - the first by Hannah Beckhusen (Baldwinsville, NY/Faith Heritage) followed by a Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) goal off a pass from Kimberly Orihel (Clinton, OH/Cuyahoga Valley Christian) for the 2-1 lead at the half.
Waynesburg found the 2-2 equalizer off a Geneva own goal in the 57th minute.
The Golden Tornadoes regained the lead at 3-2 when Jamie Sumner (Beaver Falls, PA/Beaver County Christian School) found Orihel.
With the game now at 3-2 the scoreboard was just getting warmed up.
Yellow Jacket Becky Hotek took a pass from Davis for the 3-3 tie. Not five minutes later on the other side of the field Beckhusen made her second unassisted goal of the game.
Now 4-3 with Geneva ahead, in the 82nd minute of play, Davis nicked the ball passed Geneva goal keeper Anna McMullen (Uniontown, OH/Lake Center Christian) to take the GTs to overtime.
The ninth goal of the game and Waynesburg’s game winner came 3:19 minutes in overtime off the header by Karleigh Murphey off Emily Mullady’s corner kick.
McMullen finished the 94 minutes with ten saves
Geneva finishes its season Saturday November 1 at Bethany College starting at 1 p.m.
