Geneva College’s Music Department recently sponsored five students who performed at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Tri-State Auditions at Slippery Rock University. The competition included colleges from western Pennsylvania, eastern Ohio and West Virginia.

Junior music business major Leah Finley placed first among the Sophomore Women Classical division and first among Lower Level College Women Musical Theater.

Senior music education major Justin Addicott placed first among Upper Level College Men Musical Theater.

Both received cash prizes.

Finley says, “It's a rewarding feeling to see what you've been working on for months finally pay off. It gives me drive to keep working on my music and to hopefully compete in more vocal competitions in the future. And seeing my vocal teacher, Dr. David Kenneth Smith, give me a thumbs up and a huge smile after I won made things even better because I knew he was proud of me.”

For Addicott, the experience was also rewarding. “I made it to the finals my sophomore year but did not win, so I was really glad to have been able to go again and win it this year. I am blessed to have had the opportunity to represent Geneva and bring home a victory.”

Senior music business major Isaac Fritsch, senior music education major Amie Speers and junior music education major Rose Lundy also performed but did not advance against the stiff competition. The singers were accompanied by Geneva pianists Michael Kearney and Anne Speers.

“The NATS Auditions are a great opportunity for our students to perform and hear their peers in the region, and match their wits and talents against them,” says music and voice professor Dr. Smith. “I especially like the fact that the challenge encourages them to raise their performance to their highest level.”
