Beaver Falls, PA – Junior Heidi Mann (Colorado Springs, CO/Evangelical Christian Academy) scored a season-high 26 points to lead Geneva to a 71-58 win over Thiel in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference opener. It was the highest total scored by a Geneva woman since Mann scored 27 against Franciscan on December 29, 2012. The 5-7 guard played a solid all-around game, grabbing seven rebounds, dishing off six assists and adding five steals.

The Golden Tornadoes improved to 2-4 overall and 1-0 in conference play.

After losing a lead in the last three minutes Saturday against Houghton, Geneva never trailed in the game. Mann’s scoring efforts were complemented by senior Chelsea Kauffman (New Castle, PA/Neshannock) with a season high 13 points. Sophomore Nicole Hyland (Trafford, PA/Penn-Trafford) recorded her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds. She also added five assists.

“It feels good to win the conference opener,” said Geneva coach Lori Wynn. “The girls played hard and we learned a lot from the Houghton game. We’re young and we’re going to learn as the season goes along.

“Heidi played well and Nicole played very well in the paint against bigger girls, too. She had a great game and leading from post to post is about as good as it gets.”

Geneva’s trio of standout performances more than offset another stellar performance by Thiel’s Jaclyn Watkins. Watkins, an Aliquippa, always plays well in her closest return to home and had a double-double again at Metheny – this time 24 points and 15 rebounds.

Geneva continues in conference play Saturday with a 4:00 visit to St. Vincent.
