Beloved teacher and friend Dr. Howard Mattsson-Bozé, Professor Emeritus of History and Humanities, was called to the Lord on the evening of Friday, January 30, 2015. He will be greatly missed by the students, colleagues and friends whom he faithfully served for so many years. Remembering Dr. Mattsson-Bozé

Dr. Mattsson-Bozé joined the Geneva College faculty in 1962 as a professor of history. In 1971 he took a leave of absence to teach humanities at Damavand College in Tehran, Iran, where he and his family lived until their return in 1974. He remained at Geneva until retiring in 2005. Throughout his 40-year tenure, Dr. Mattsson-Bozé served at various times as the Chair of the Department of History, Political Science and Sociology; Coordinator of the Humanities Program; and Chair of the Academic Program Committee.

He earned a B.A. and an M.A. in History from Northwestern University in 1958 and 1959, and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Minnesota in 1965. In addition, when Geneva was in need of a sociology professor, Dr. Mattsson-Bozé returned to school, receiving an M.A. in Sociology from the University of Pittsburgh in 1988.

In 2008, Dr. Mattsson-Bozé received Geneva’s Distinguished Service Award from alumni. As part of the 2012 commencement ceremonies, Geneva presented him an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters. And in his honor, an annual prize is awarded each year to the graduating senior sociology major that has best embodied a commitment to excellence in scholarship and compassionate care for others in the spirit of Christ.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his grandson Samuel Mark Mattsson-Bozé, his son-in-law Jeffrey Paul Hart, and his sister, Britt Lillian Mattsson-Bozé.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Betty Sandberg Mattsson-Bozé, his four children and their surviving spouses, Daniel and Linda Mattsson-Bozé, Arlette Hart, Terri and Kenneth Faux, and Joel and Beth Mattsson-Bozé, as well as 15 grandchildren and one great-grandson. He is also survived by his siblings and their spouses; sister Grace and husband Everett Sondreal, brother Winston and wife Ingrid Mattsson-Bozé, and sister Joy Mattsson-Bozé.

Friends will be received in the Hill & Kunselman Funeral Home, www.hillandkunselman.com., 3801 Fourth Ave., College Hill, Beaver Falls on Friday, Feb. 6, 2015 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral service will be held on Saturday at 11 a.m. in the College Hill Presbyterian Church with his son, Rev. Joel Mattsson-Bozé officiating.

Interment will be private.
