Geneva Turns Bitter Loss into a Win against Suffolk

Ft. Myers, FL – Geneva, now 2-2 overall, surrendered a bitter loss to Curry College in a 4-3 final and then turned around to defeat Suffolk College 2-1.

Geneva was the first to cross home plate in the first inning over Curry College with Lucia Fee’s (Wampum, PA / Mohawk) single hitting in Dayna Hicks (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) and advancing Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD / Chapelgate Christian) to third. Hicks crossed home plate again in the top of third off Laura Beck’s (Canfield, OH / Canfield) hit to leftfield. After an error in the bottom of the third inning Curry closed the gap to 2-1. Taylor Yarletts (Wampum, PA / Mohawk) singled to right field batting in Beck for the 3-1 lead at the top of the fifth inning. Curry’s bats came alive in the bottom of the seventh as Geneva gave up two hits and an error to load to bases. Curry put up a sacrifice fly to reach 3-2. In the last pitch of the game Curry tripled to centerfield for the win.

The bitter taste of defeat did not last long in the mouth of the Golden Tornadoes. After the first five pitches of their next game against Suffolk College, Geneva had already scored its first run in the 2-1 win. Andy Hinds (Montrose, PA / Montrose) singled to center field batting in Hicks while advancing Sevy to third, Beck to second. Samantha Johnson (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional) also singled to center field batting in Sevy for the two run inning that would lead the GTs to a bounce back victory. Johnson earned her second ‘w’ of the season striking out three in the seven innings of work.

“A way better feeling after today’s split,” said Head Coach Van Zanic.

“We were in a position to win two again but we played much more solid and managed a split against two very good teams.”

“Sam Johnson showed why she is a two time all-conference pitcher.”

Wednesday March 11 the Golden Tornadoes will face Swarthmore at 1 p.m. and Saint Joseph’s College of Maine at 3 p.m. in day three of the Gene Cusic Classic in Fort Myers, Florida.
