Case Western’s offensive too much for GTs; Geneva drops 9-7, 19-2 finals

Cleveland, OH – Geneva softball turned around quickly from a pair of wins against Houghton yesterday to face Case Western Reserve University on the road. The quick turnaround resulted in two losses - 9-7, 19-2 - and the pair of losses drops Geneva’s overall record to 9-7 overall.

Head Coach Van Zanic commented, “This was one of the best offensive teams we’ve played against in my 13 years as a head coach.”

Despite Case Western’s opening inning of four runs, Geneva tied up the game in the third inning and kept the lead in the fourth and even widened the 6-5 gap to 7-5 off a Laura Innocenzi (Cortland, OH / Lakeview) single to right field batting in Lucia Fee (Wampum, PA / Mohawk) in the top of the fifth.

“We put ourselves in a position to win game one but couldn’t close it out.”

Case Western responded to the 7-5 scoreboard with four runs to take the first game 9-7.

Samantha Johnson (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional) was charged with the loss.

In game two, Laura Beck (Canfield, OH / Canfield) hit a double RBI followed by a single RBI by Fee for a two run rally top of the third. The two runs wouldn’t be enough against Case Western’s 19 run offensive outburst.

Andy Hinds (Montrose, PA / Montrose) was on the wrong side of the decision, taking the loss.

Monday March 23, Geneva will host Mount Aloysius for a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.

Coach Zanic walked away with a positive note saying, “Our offense continues to improve as we approach conference play.” Geneva has some work to do before that but sees Thomas More on the calendar on Saturday March 28 on the road.
