Beaver Falls, PA – Conference play begin for the Golden Tornadoes Wednesday evening, at home against defending league champions, Washington & Jefferson. Geneva took the first game 6-3 but settled for the split in the game two with a 7-2 loss. The split takes Geneva’s overall record to 11-11, 1-1 in the Presidents’ Athletic Conference.

Sam Johnson’s (Murrysville, PA / Franklin Regional) two run double sent Geneva back into the win column after dropping three straight games last week. Johnson’s double was the third hit in the team’s four second inning.

Johnson struck again in the fourth with two outs. She singled to right field starting a three run rally that created a 6-0 lead. Taylor Yarletts (Wampum, PA / Mohawk) and Dayna Hicks (Beaver Falls, PA / Blackhawk) walked, loading the bases for Clara Sevy (Sykesville, MD / Chapelgate Christian). Three runs scored on an error as Sevy put the ball in play.

Johnson’s offensive complemented her effort in the circle as she allowed only one earned run, four hits and one walk. Andrea Hinds (Montrose, PA / Montrose) put away the final three outs to record the save.

The Presidents answered in the game two. Abby Cunningham (McMurray, PA / Peters Township) opened W&J’s third inning with a homer. With two batters on base, Emily Watson drove another ball pass the outfield net for a three run homer. Geneva would be unable to close the gap after the 5-1 inning.

The Golden Tornadoes’ second run came from Laura Beck’s (Canfield, OH / Canfield) rbi sacrifice fly allowing Yarletts to tag up at third and go home.

Hinds was charged with the loss.

“We probably deserved to split today,” said Head Coach Van Zanic.

“We played a solid first game with good pitching and defense. In game two we couldn’t come up with a big hit and it cost us. It was nice to get at least one against a very good W&J team.”

The Golden Tornadoes are on the road tomorrow at Waynesburg in a doubleheader starting at 3:30 p.m.
