Kacie MooreGeneva College, one of only two Christian colleges east of the Mississippi with a Communication Disorders major, celebrates its first student to receive 2015 NSSLHA Member Honors, junior Kacie Moore of Doylestown, Ohio. The National Student Speech Language Hearing Association (NSSLHA) is the national organization for graduate undergraduate students of communication disorders and the only student association recognized by the American Speech Language Hearing Association (ASHA).

Of the approximately 13,000 members at more than 300 chapters, last year only 52 students received NSSLHA Member Honors. NSSLHA requires that honorees “are awarded on the basis of scholastic achievement, service to the academic unit, professional conduct, and service to NSSHLA.” Only two students may be nominated from each chapter.

Moore, a 4.0 communication disorders major, will graduate from Geneva in three years instead of the traditional four, but that hasn’t stopped her from maximizing her campus involvement.  As president of Geneva’s NSSLHA chapter, Kacie, with her team of club executives, has built the club into a robust program with a full schedule for both semesters.

Last fall, Moore led the chapter to the 2014 NSSHLA conference in Akron, Ohio. Kacie also worked with Geneva’s Office of Admissions and the Communication Department to produce the first Communication and Communication Disorders Day for prospective students to hear about programs within the Communication Department. Other events this year included “My Story,” an evening of educative testimonials concerning Williams Syndrome, and a Portfolio Day for students to assemble work they completed in their classes.

As a distinctly Christian college, Geneva’s NSSLHA chapter has a different flavor than other chapters, as members participate in mentoring activities like the big-sister-little-sister program, and volunteer their services at Tiger Pause, a Christian after-school ministry.

“As you can see many new and exciting things have happened with our chapter since Kacie took a leadership role,” said Dr. Elaine Hockenberger, Moore’s academic advisor and honor nominee . ”She has been instrumental in the success of NSSHLA for this academic year.”

Moore’s recognition includes a certificate of honor from the National Office, a NSSLHA Honor Cord, complimentary registration to attend the ASHA Convention, and acknowledgement at the NSSLHA Honors ceremony and in NSSLHA print and electronic communications.
