Geneva Selects Josh Guiser & Anna Wargo as GT PAC Scholar Athletes of Year

Beaver Falls, PA – Geneva College has selected football and track male student-athlete Josh Guiser (Newell, PA / Frazier ) and cross country and track female student-athlete Anna Wargo (Pittsburgh, PA / Avonworth) as the Golden Tornado’s Presidents’ Athletic Conference Scholar Athletes of the Year.

Tuesday, May 19, 2015 the Presidents’ Athletic Conference hosts its second annual Scholar-Athlete of the Year Banquet and 60th Anniversary Celebration. The evening is set to begin at 6 p.m. at the Le Mont Restaurant in Pittsburgh. During the honorary event each member of the league (Bethany College, Chatham University, Geneva College, Grove City College, Saint Vincent College, Thiel College, Thomas More College, Washington & Jefferson College, Waynesburg University, Westminster College along with Carnegie Mellon University and Case Western Reserve University as football affiliate members) will honor a male and female student-athlete for their outstanding work each of the three categories; academics, athletics and campus community involvement.

GuiserJosh Guiser is Geneva College’s 2015 male student-athlete selection. Guiser is a six-time PAC Academic Honor Roll student-athlete as a dual athlete. In addition he has been recognized seven times on Geneva’s Dean’s list.

During his four years as a Golden Tornado he has left his mark at Geneva for ages to come while setting school records in both football and track. In the football program he set the record for career kickoff return yardage at 1,898. On the track he set the indoor 60 meters and 200 meters records in 2014 and was a member of the outdoor 4 x 200 (2014) and 4 x 100 (2013, 2015) record setting relays. His performances have been honored as the Geneva male student-athlete of the week four times. The PAC has named him player of the week twice - one time for each sport; November 10, 2015 as the football special teams player of the week and on February 9, 2015 and the conference’s men’s indoor track athlete of the week.

On February 11, 2015 the league recognized Guiser for his academic success and community involvement as the PAC Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) male scholar-athlete of the month. While excelling in the classroom with a 3.9 GPA, Guiser has taken on the leadership roles as the president of Geneva’s Accounting and Golden Tornado Outreach clubs. Guiser is an active member is the school’s Business club and serves as the football representative on the leadership team of Geneva’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).  He is a member of Delta Mu Delta, a business honor society, and serves as the treasurer for Geneva’s Becker CPA Review organization. He also serves as the site coordinator for Geneva’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), a program designed to provide aid for any families with basic returns that have low income and or elderly within the Beaver Falls community.

Anna Wargo has been selected as Geneva’s 2015 female PAC Scholar Athlete of the Year. For her work in the classroom she has been listed on the Dean’s list every semester of her dual student-athlete career while studying Education. Holding a 3.98 GPA, Wargo has been listed in the PAC Academic Honor Roll seven times.

Since her first race, Wargo has been one of Geneva’s top five runners. She was the fifth runner on the fastest cross country women’s team in Geneva Cross Country history that placed second in the conference championship in 2012. Overall, Wargo finished as the top 15th runner on the all-time list for Geneva’s fastest 6K.

On the track she has compiled a stellar list of accomplishments including: second place in the 5K race (2013 PAC Indoor Meet), seventh in the 3K Steeplechase event (2013 PAC Outdoor Championships), ninth in the 3K Steeplechase event (2013 NCCAA Outdoor Championships), first place in the 5K (2014 PAC Indoor Meet), fifth in the 3K Steeplechase (2014 PAC Outdoor Championships), sixth in the 3K Steeplechase (2014 NCCAA Outdoor Championships), second place women’s Distance Medley Relay member (2015 PAC Indoor Meet), and fifth in the 3K Steeplechase (2015 PAC Outdoor Championships.

WargoWhen she is not training or in class or studying, Wargo has taken a large leadership role on the Cross Country team. Head Coach Brain Yowler said, “Over the past four years Anna has absolutely been the heart of Geneva College Cross Country!”

“She has been a model of consistency and she has poured her heart and soul into this team. She’s been an incredible example to her teammates of someone who trains hard while excelling in the classroom and maturing in her faith.”

“She has held this team together through many difficult times. Anytime one of the girls was struggling with something they could always count on Anna being there for them. That’s an invaluable contribution that simply cannot be measure with a clock!”

Geneva’s Athletic Director, Van Zanic, said, “The PAC Scholar-Athlete Banquet has become one of the true highlights of the year for me and for the conference.”

“Having the opportunity to honor some of our top student-athletes across the PAC is a great way to close out the academic and athletic year. Both Josh and Anna have represented Geneva College and our athletic department in a tremendous way for the past four years, both in and out of the classroom. They are both well deserving recipients of Geneva’s Scholar-Athlete honors and are great examples of what it means to be student-athletes.”
