Geneva to offer actuarial science minor

Actuarial Science

Beginning in the fall 2015 semester, Geneva College’s Department of Chemistry, Math, and Physics will offer a minor in actuarial science in association with the recently restructured applied mathematics major. The minor includes 27 credits of business, economics, accounting and computer science classes that pairs with the 35 credits of math classes in the applied mathematics major.

According to the Society of Actuaries and Casualty Actuarial Society, actuaries evaluate the statistical likelihood of certain future occurrences, design creative solutions to reduce the likelihood of undesirable events, and decrease the impact of undesirable events that do occur.

At Geneva, students are able to take classes in calculus-based probability and statistics, as well as quantitative analysis, accounting, finance and other relevant topics. Department faculty members have designed the minor to cover many of the essential elements to the field of actuarial science, and will work with students to investigate independent study depending on the needs of the student. Actuaries often go on to work in the insurance field, but can find applications in many different business environments.

To become a certified actuary, students must pass several exams, two of which can be completed during a student’s undergraduate education. Geneva students pursuing this certification can work independently with faculty to develop capabilities specific to their goals, and prepare for examinations. Faculty can work with students to develop independent study courses tailored to their needs.

With the revision to the applied math major, students are now required to complete 35 credits of core math classes as well as either a minor in actuarial science or 9 credits of computer science and a minor in biology, business, chemistry, engineering, environmental science or physics. This will result in a total of 62-64 credits.

Department head Dr. John Stahl and faculty advisor Dr. Phil Holladay worked with the relevant academic departments and administration to approve the minor.
