Expedition Offers Adventure, New Relationships

Actuarial Science

Register for ExpeditionThe Adventure Division of Geneva College’s Center for Student Engagement will host the annual Expedition from August 21-25. The Expedition is an outdoor adventure experience offered for incoming first-year students and transfers. Participating students will engage in ropes course challenges, camping, group activities and spiritual reflection.

Registration is due July 31. The cost is $200 if registered by July 15, or $220 if registered after that date.

Although the Expedition is not required for incoming students, student development staff members strongly encourage participation for a successful new-student transition. Students will be given the opportunity to build deep relationships with others in their class and have time to reflect upon the changes occurring in their lives, all in the context of a fun and challenging adventure.

Participating students will also have the added benefit of moving into their residence halls before the trip begins.

Expedition leader Rebekah Case sees the trip as a great way to help students navigate the transition to college. “Students encounter a play-filled creative learning environment where they gain skills in reflection, forge friendships with classmates and create a plan for how they will utilize their gifts to continue navigating and growing throughout the transition,” she explains, “Students are also connected with staff and upperclassman who serve as mentors.  All these things, plus the opportunity to connect with a smaller group of students prior to orientation give Expedition students a head start towards succeeding in college.”

Tessa Cooper, a current student who experienced the trip her freshman year, found Expedition to be very helpful in her transition to college life. “I really enjoyed Expedition,” she says, “The camping trip and challenge course exercises enabled me to make good friends with a small group of freshman, and some wise upperclassman leaders, even before Welcome Week started.”

The Adventure Division of the Center for Student Engagement is specifically designed to help build character, teamwork, promote unity and develop leadership through the use of adventure and experiential-based education. Their goal is to serve the local area by providing opportunities for growth, development, ministry and education through a variety of activities including: high and low ropes course elements; initiatives; backpacking, caving, and rock climbing trips; experiential education classes; and student leadership development.

Students who enroll in the Expedition will meet at 3 p.m. at the Center for Student Engagement on Friday, August 21. All camping gear will be provided and is included in the cost of the trip. The trip is limited to the first 20 registrants in an intentional effort to cultivate deep relationships. Registrations are taken on a first-come, first-served basis.
